Dean Owens & The Sinners
Lively in Sydney
Event Description
UK Artist Of The Year 2021, 22, 23, 24 -- American UK Readers Poll Award winning troubadour Dean Owens is one of Scotland’s best musical exports - with fans including authors Irvine Welsh and Ian Rankin (whose fictional detective Rebus has Dean’s songs on playlist), and BBC legend Bob Harris. His band The Sinners make a glorious, brass infused, driving sound with electric guitar, trumpet and double bass, with Dean’s searingly soulful voice upfront. A thrilling, unique blend of Scottish roots and rocky Americana, with added desert noir. Expect a joyous mix of songs and stories from Dean’s 12 album career, and a life on the road. Earworm inducing melodies and great songs; the heart of a rock’n’roller combined with the spellbinding delivery of folk’s best storytellers, with humour and melancholy intertwined. His new album Spirit Ridge was recorded in Italy (the land of his lion tamer ancestor) with renowned producer Don Antonio. Following directly on from his highly acclaimed collaborations with Calexico, the songs on Spirit Ridge are both monumental and deeply personal, rooted in an imaginary hinterland connecting the lush Italian hills, the US desert states and post industrial Scotland. Other recent collaborators include his long time buddy Will Kimbrough, Grant-Lee Philips (and mutual friend, Melbourne Kiwi, Matt Joe Gow). 2024 highlights included standing ovations at Cambridge Folk Festival, sold out tours in the Netherlands and USA, with 2025 kicking off at Glasgow’s legendary Celtic Connections before hitting the road in Australia for a 3 week tour, starting at Port Fairy Folk Festival. Owens sings with a dark majesty that matches the gigantic emotional pull of his songs… dirt caked desert noir **** Mojomore intoxicating than the most treacherous of mezcals… **** Rolling Stone
